BLS Solicits Comments on Local Area Unemployment Statistics Revisions Proposed

About

The Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is seeking approval under the Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) for revisions to the Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) data collection program.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has the statutory responsibility of collecting and publishing monthly information on employment, the average wage received, and the hours worked by area and industry. The LAUS program develops employment and unemployment statistics through a cooperative Federal-State program that uses employment and unemployment inputs available in State agencies. These estimates are key indicators of local economic conditions.

The Current Population Survey (CPS) is the household survey that is the source of the national unemployment rate. The LAUS combines current data from the CPS, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey, and state unemployment insurance (UI) systems. It also uses data from several sources, including the CPS, the CES program, state UI systems, and the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS), to create estimates of employment and unemployment.

The thirty-day Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) notice on changes to the LAUS technical memoranda appeared in an April 24, 2018 Federal Register Notice (FRN). Comments were due by May 25, 2018.
