BLS Unemployment Rate Mapping Tool for States, Metro Areas, and Counties
About
The Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) offers a mapping tool for Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS), which helps customers find unemployment rates for states, local areas and counties.
About LAUS
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has the statutory responsibility of collecting and publishing monthly information on employment, the average wage received, and the hours worked by area and industry.
The LAUS program develops employment and unemployment statistics through a cooperative Federal-State program that uses employment and unemployment inputs available in State agencies. These estimates are key indicators of local economic conditions.
The Current Population Survey (CPS) is the Census Bureau household survey that is the source of the national unemployment rate. The LAUS combines current data from the CPS, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey, and state unemployment insurance (UI) systems. It also uses data from several sources, including the CPS, the CES program, state UI systems, and the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS), to create estimates of employment and unemployment.
About the Unemployment Rate Mapping Tool
BLS publishes thousands of unemployment rates each month for states, metro areas, and counties. BLS created a geographic mapping tool and has improved several features of the tool.
