Updated Geospatial Technology Competency Model

About

The Department of Labor has released a newly updated Geospatial Technology Competency Model, which provides a redefined competency framework outlining cross-cutting and sector specific competencies and skills needed by professionals along with the latest industry and related links.

Geospatial information and analysis has its own set of competencies that are critical to many industry sectors, including natural resources, energy utilities, environmental management, and supply chain management.

This competency model results from the collaborative efforts of champions from various organizations, including DOL’s Employment and Training Administration (ETA),the GeoTech Center, and industry experts in the field of geospatial technology and practice.

Competency models are great tools for conversations with employers and community colleges to find out how to match competencies with employer needs. Access the Advanced Manufacturing Competency Model on the Competency Model Clearinghouse for another example.

The Advanced Manufacturing Competency Model now reflects the knowledge and skills needed by today’s manufacturing workforce. For the first time, the rapidly growing electronics/semiconductor manufacturing industry is represented in this model.

Employers, educators and workforce system professionals can use the Competency Models Clearinghouse to understand and identify the skill sets and competencies that are essential to educate and train a globally competitive workforce for the gig/sharing economy as well as other occupations.

In addition to providing existing competency models, skill standards, technical curriculum, certifications, and other resources for key industries, this site also provides detailed instruction and resources for employers and practitioners to develop their own competency models where none exist.
