About the PHIT Competency Model
The PHIT Competency Model outlines the essential skills, knowledge, and abilities required to excel in the public health information technology sector. By aligning training programs and curricula with this model, stakeholders can ensure that the workforce is well-prepared to meet current and future challenges in public health informatics and technology.
This initiative is part of the ONC’s Public Health Informatics & Technology Workforce Development Program, funded through the American Rescue Plan Act. The program aims to bolster U.S. public health IT efforts, enhance COVID-19 data collection, and increase the representation of underserved communities within the public health IT workforce. Over the next four years, ten recipients, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other minority-serving institutions, will train over 5,000 individuals in public health informatics and technology.
The PHIT Competency Model is more than just a framework; it is a strategic tool that empowers various stakeholders:
- Educators can use the model to tailor their curricula, ensuring that students gain the competencies needed to thrive in the public health informatics and technology field.
- Employers can leverage the model to identify the skills and abilities required for their workforce, facilitating better hiring and professional development practices.
- Job Seekers can utilize the model to understand the competencies needed in the industry, guiding their career development and job search efforts.
