2024 Disability Survey - BLS Solicits Comments on the Current Population Survey Supplement

About

The Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is seeking approval under the Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) for revisions to the questions in the July 2024 Disability data collection program for a Census Current Population Survey (CPS) Supplement.

July 2024 CPS Disability Supplement: BLS Publishes Sixty-Day PRA Notice

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has published the sixty-day PRA notice for the July 2024 Current Population Survey Disability Supplement which will be conducted at the Department of Labor's Chief Evaluation Office. The survey size is about 50,000 respondents

The Disability Supplement will provide information on the labor force participation rates for people with disabilities and those experiencing work-limiting health conditions or difficulties; the health conditions or difficulties they face; barriers to employment; challenges that make it difficult to perform their jobs; and job-related accommodations.

Click here for the November 27 Federal Register Notice. Comments are due by January 26, 2024.

A copy of the proposed revision of the Survey can be obtained from Erin Good by emailing BLS_PRA_Public@bls.gov. Comments can also be directed to Ms. Good at this address.

Additional CPS Supplement Background

Since the supplement was last collected in 2021, work patterns have changed, policies have changed, and assistive technologies have advanced. In the 2024 iteration of the Disability Supplement, a number of questions will be added and others will be dropped.

A number of questions are thus being added to the 2024 Supplement to identify individuals with a work-limiting health condition or difficulty and to classify or identify these conditions. Questions also will be asked to determine if work-limiting conditions or disabilities are temporary. The supplement will continue to include questions about barriers to employment and workplace accommodations. Questions about participation in specific assistance programs, the receipt of financial assistance, working from home, and others will be dropped to accommodate the new focus.

About the Census' CPS

The Current Population Survey (CPS) is the household survey that is the source of the national unemployment rate. The LAUS combines current data from the CPS, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey, and state unemployment insurance (UI) systems. It also uses data from several sources, including the CPS, the CES program, state UI systems, and the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS), to create estimates of employment and unemployment.
