Recent Updates to OnTheMap for Emergency Management and Hurricane Preparedness

About

Census Local Employment Dynamics (LED) webinars help you learn how to use OnTheMap in the event of a natural disaster.  On October 23, 2019, the Census Bureau presented, "Recent Updates to LODES and OnTheMap."  View a recording of the event here.

OnTheMap for Emergency Management Data Tool

OnTheMap for Emergency Management is a public data tool, developed by the U.S. Census Bureau, which provides an intuitive web-based interface for viewing the potential effects of disasters on the U.S. workforce and population.

Users can easily retrieve reports containing detailed workforce, population, and housing characteristics for hurricanes, floods, wildfires, winter storms, and federal disaster declaration areas.  The tool applies Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) data for planning and natural disaster management purposes. LODES - LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics - is used in the OnTheMap tool. You can find more information on LODES in this Local Employment Dynamics (LED) training.

Webinar on Hurricane Preparedness Using OnTheMap

The U.S. Census Bureau and the LED Partnership in collaboration with the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) host regular webinars to demonstrate the useful functions of the OnTheMap for Emergency Management data tool. Recordings of past webinars and future webinars planned are also located on the Census website.

LEHD Interactive Mapping

This web-based mapping and reporting application is used to illustrate where workers are employed and where they live. The application is paired with reports on age, earnings, industry distributions, race, ethnicity, educational attainment, and gender, while the tool itself features comprehensive block-level coverage for home and work areas, six powerful analysis tools, user-created outputs, and easy-to-use online documentation.

OnTheMap for Emergency Management, an offshoot of this application, provides an intuitive interface for accessing U.S. population and workforce statistics, in real time, for areas affected by natural disasters
